STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- An industrial generator has been activated in Rossville after a power outage in the area affected more than 1,000 homes Monday afternoon, said an official.

Con Edison’s outage map indicated around 1,100 customers near Correll Avenue and Veterans Road East were affected by the outage at around 3 p.m. An equipment failure was listed as the cause.

The outage came as Staten Islanders continued to battle dangerously high temperatures amid a heat advisory that was extended through Tuesday.

“An industrial generator staged at Winant Avenue and Mason Boulevard has now been activated to support the system during peak usage,” Assemblyman Michael Reilly (R-South Shore) wrote on Twitter.

Con Edison did not immediately relay the cause of the equipment failure. The company’s crews were able to restore power within an hour.

Last week, Con Edison warned that high levels of heat could drive up demand on the city’s grid and lead to outages, adding that its crews would be prepared to respond as blackouts occurred.

Con Edison said residents running air conditioners should close-off unoccupied rooms to conserve money and energy. Additionally, the company said setting air conditioners to the highest comfortable temperature will keep costs low since every degree lower on a thermostat increases costs.

Running appliances like ovens, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers during the early morning or late at night can reduce heat and moisture in the home, said the release outlining energy-saving tips.
